Frame Building in Mediated Public Diplomacy

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the role of public diplomacy in international conflicts. Mediated public diplomacy is defined as organized attempts by a government to exert as much control as possible over the way state policy is portrayed in foreign media. It is argued that frame building contests play a central role in mediated public diplomacy. Understanding mediated public diplomacy is central due to abundant evidence that media framing can have a significant effect on the public’s support for war and peace. Yet despite increasing interest in mediated public diplomacy and more generally in frame building, empirical examination and theoretical understanding of the field are still limited. This project proposes both a model and a method to facilitate empirical analysis of frame building in mediated public diplomacy.

This project is lead by Prof. Tamir Sheafer and Dr. Shaul Shenhav of the Hebrew University, with cooperation with Prof. Wouter Van Atteveldt of the VU University, Amsterdam.
